Charity Work

Health, fitness and well-being are close to my heart.  I have always enjoyed being able to support charitable organisations whose passion matches my own.  Please take a minute or two to read about these organisations; I would be delighted if you decided to lend your own support to them as well!

The Point Foundation

Rwanda 08 - Sally holding babyAn organisation which is dedicated to helping children in some of the most deprived areas of South Africa and Rwanda.  The Point works with orphanages who have no other outside help.  I have visited the Rwandan orphanage project and it was this experience which confirmed my commitment to the cause.  I am now an Ambassador, using my profile to raise awareness of the Point, its work and most importantly, the plight of the children it seeks to help.

NSPCC

The Children's charity is there to protect kids all over the country and needs little introduction from me.  I have enjoyed supporting the South and East Division by taking part in events like the Big Bike Ride.  Fundraisers like this are vital if services such as Childline are to continue.  What better way to raise money than to jump on a bike and pedal off with family and friends?

Rocking Horse Appeal

These guys are based close to my home.  They raise money to help ensure that the kids of Sussex get the very best care in hospital.  They buy much-needed specialist equipment over and above that funded by the NHS and as a result, local kids get the care they deserve.

I make personal appearances at their events and I've particularly enjoyed the Rockinghorse Fun Runs at Hove Park in recent times.  Raising money by running with family and friends - it doesn't get much better than that!

Royal Parks Foundation

This charity raises money to preserve over 5,000 acres of beautiful land across London's eight Royal parks.  Millions of people enjoy free access to these wonderful open spaces each year and the maintenance costs are huge.

In 2008 I became an Ambassador for the Royal Parks Half Marathon, a new fund-raising event which takes runners through some of London's most delightful open spaces.  I provided PR support to raise the event's profile and to engage families.  As you might have guessed, involvement includes the use of my running shoes!

GLL Sport Foundation

This organisation has been set up to support London's young people in pursuit of their sporting ambitions.  When I was a young athlete, one of my biggest challenges was funding.  It was a constant struggle to keep my head above water.  GLL will change all that by supporting today's young talent with financial grants.  I am honoured to be the organisation's Patron.

Other activities

I was pleased to be asked by Sussex Rotarians to support the Hike 4 Hospices campaign in 2008.  4 of our local hospices do a sterling job in caring for seriously ill people at a cost of over £14 million each year.  Most of this money has to be raised through events like Hike 4 Hospices.

I know we nornally walk to lose a few pounds, but do please consider hiking to gain pounds - the sort which you can send on to this worthy cause!
