Speaking - Setting goals for success

Nature or nurture?  Some say that a champion is born, not made.  As the daughter of an Essex farmer, all I know is that before the age of 14, my life revolved around horses, cows, sheds and mucking out.

That all changed in 1980, when I sat down one afternoon and watched the Moscow Olympics on TV.  I'd done some running at school and was pretty good.  I watched those athletes on the TV and I knew that this was what I wanted.  The dream of Olympic success became my life.

My journey took me from rural Essex to the winner's podium at the Barcelona Olympics, then on to the Stuttgart World Championships and a World Record.  I was Commonwealth, European, World and Olympic Champion concurrently.

I speak candidly to my audiences, sharing my experiences and knowledge about getting the best from myself.  People have often told me that they find my story inspiring, not just because of my achievements, but because they feel that they, too, can go on to achieve more in life. 

Nature or nurture?  I can tell you that we all have the chance to take control of our lives.  The issue is whether or not we choose to do so.
