A celebrity edition of The Weakest Link saw Sally and other stars pitting their wits against each other for the chance to raise money for their chosen charity. “I didn’t know whether I was more scared of the questions or of Anne Robinson,” said Sally, after coming out on top in a real nailbiter. “In the end, I really enjoyed myself; Anne was great and I was over the moon to beat Gazza in the final!” The England football legend was gracious in defeat, according to Sally. “What a nice guy! He’s got a great sense of humour and is obviously no slouch in the knowledge department…all the more reason for me to be pleased with my win!”

This summer, people all over the UK have a fantastic chance to try athletics in a relaxed, fun environment. Sally is one of several former Team GB athletes who are appearing in various venues across the country to offer advice and encouragement. “I’ve always felt that we’ll only get more people participating in athletics if we show them how much fun it can be,” said Sally during her visit to the Milton Keynes event. “Who knows? We might have uncovered a future member of Team GB today!”

Sally will be appearing at further McCain’s Track and Field Roadshows:

22 July in Trafalgar Square, London (12-3pm)

22 August at the Blue Carpet, Newcastle (12-3pm)

Riding 100 miles of hilly terrain in hot sunshine isn’t everybody’s idea of a good time, but this is what Sally did over two days to raise money for the Point Foundation. “Actually, it wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be,” she admitted over a glass of cool wine on the finish line in Eastbourne. “I really loved training with all my friends. We got fit enough to enjoy the scenery on the way, which was a bonus to go along with some serious funds!”

The Point Foundation supports orphanages in Rwanda and South Africa. Find out more at www.pointfoundation.co.uk.

Late June saw a weekend of sporting fun in Brighton’s Preston Park, as local people came to have a go at a wide range of sports and activities under the banner of Takepart, a City Council initiative. “It was amazing,” declared Sally. “They had everything from jive to cricket. The idea was to show people that there are so many different ways of getting exercise and all of them are good fun. I loved watching the kids having a crack at the drumming with Stomp. Noisy but wonderful!”

“Encouraging families to get active is a subject very close to my heart, so I am thrilled and delighted to be able to show my support for National Family Week,” said Sally during this year’s inaugural event held in late May. “The family is so important to the development of our social culture. Growing up, if I hadn't received the love and support from my family who knows if I would have achieved what I did. Now, being a mum to three boys I want to give them the same”.

Next year’s NFW will run between 31 May and 6 June. For more details visit www.nationalfamilyweek.co.uk.

Shoreham Airport provided a fitting venue for the recent launch of the 2009 Hike4Hospices campaign. Over 250 walkers are expected to raise more than 40,000 pounds while walking the South Downs and Sally encouraged people from all over the region to get involved. “These specialist centres aren’t funded by the NHS. Without this fundraising, these wonderful hospices and the staff in them would not exist. The care they give to those who are terminally ill is priceless for the families concerned. So come on, get the walking boots out, get fit and raise some money for your local hospice!” Walkers can choose to walk the entire two day route or just one or two sections.

Find out all about this year’s walk at www.hike4hospices.com.

Sally paid tribute at an Award Night to Co-op workers who raised thousands of pounds for The Point Foundation. “These guys have been amazing,” said Sally. “They’ve encouraged Co-op customers to pop a few pence in the collection boxes and now we can use that small change to make a big difference in Africa. Thank you to all the lovely people at the Co-op, that’s customers and staff!”

In April, Sally was delighted to become a Patron of Chestnut Tree House, a Sussex based children’s hospice. “I find Chestnut Tree’s work so humbling. They provide desperately needed care for seriously ill children and their families in the most loving environment. I’m encouraging all my running friends, both old and new, to join together and sign up to run for this worthy local cause. You can run in a big marathon or even do the Coastal Run, a 10k event dedicated to Chestnut Tree House. Whatever you decide, please run for their lives!”

Find out all about Chestnut Tree House at www.chestnut-tree-house.org.uk
